Privacy Policy
Piecemates is a puzzle journal for iPhone, made by Zoë Morken, an independent developer in Texas. This policy explains what the app collects, why, who can see it, and how to delete it.
Summary
- I collect only what the app needs: your sign-in details and the puzzles and photos you add.
- I don't sell your data, show ads, or use tracking or analytics tools.
- Your puzzle lists, puzzle times, notes and photos of finished puzzles are private to you.
- Puzzles you add to the app's shared puzzle list are public, but never show who added them.
- You can export your data or delete your account from Settings at any time.
What the app collects
You can browse puzzles without an account. When you sign up or use the app, it collects the following.
| What | Examples | Where it comes from |
|---|---|---|
| Account details | Your name, email address, and profile photo if you add one | You, or Apple or Google when you sign in with them. With Sign in with Apple you can hide your email, and I receive a relay address instead. |
| Your puzzle journal | Lists you sort puzzles into (such as Want to Try or Completed), puzzles you own, time spent on each puzzle, finish dates, progress, ratings, notes and your yearly puzzle goal | You, as you use the app |
| Photos | Box photos and photos of finished puzzles | You choose them from your library or take them with the camera. The app only sees the photos you pick. |
| Puzzles you add | Title, brand, piece count, barcode, dimensions and box photo | You, when you add a puzzle that isn't listed yet |
| Reports and corrections | What you flagged and why | You |
| Messages to support | Your email address and what you wrote | You, when you email me |
| Technical data | IP address, device type and iOS version in server logs | Your device, automatically, when the app connects to the server |
| Crash reports | What the app was doing when it crashed | Your iPhone sends them to Apple, which passes them on to me, only if you've chosen to share analytics with developers in your iPhone's settings |
The camera is used to scan barcodes and take photos. Nothing is recorded unless you save a photo.
The app doesn't collect your location, contacts or browsing activity, and it doesn't use cookies, advertising IDs or tracking tools. Because nothing tracks you across apps or websites, there's nothing for a "Do Not Track" setting to turn off. The support website is hosted on GitHub Pages and has no cookies or analytics either, though GitHub logs visitors' IP addresses for security.
How it's used
Your information is used only to run the app:
- Sign you in and keep your journal synced to your account.
- Show your puzzle lists, puzzle timer, stats and goal progress.
- Build the shared list of puzzles so others can find them by search or barcode.
- Work out a puzzle's average ratings.
- Review reports, keep the app free of abuse, and fix bugs.
I don't sell or rent your information, use it for advertising, or track you across other apps and websites.
What other people can see
| Visible to everyone | Visible only to you |
|---|---|
| Puzzles you add to the shared puzzle list, including the box photo. Your name is never shown with them. | Your puzzle lists and the puzzles you own |
| Average ratings, once a puzzle has 5 or more. Your rating counts anonymously; no one sees which rating is yours. | Time spent on puzzles, your stats and your yearly puzzle goal |
| Your individual ratings and notes | |
| Photos of your finished puzzles |
You keep ownership of the photos you upload. By adding a box photo to a puzzle, you let the app show it to other people.
A future version will add groups for swapping puzzles with friends. I'll update this policy before then, and anything you've kept private stays private unless you choose to share it.
Where your data is stored
Your data is stored with Supabase, which hosts the app's database, photos and sign-in, on servers in the United States. Database rules limit each account to its own private data.
A few other services handle parts of the app. Each only gets what it needs for its job, and each is required to protect your data at least as well as this policy describes.
| Service | What it does | What it receives |
|---|---|---|
| Supabase | Database, photo storage and sign-in | Everything listed under What the app collects |
| Apple | Sign in with Apple, app distribution and crash reports | Sign-in details; crash reports if you opted in |
| Sign in with Google, if you use it | Sign-in details |
I may share information if the law requires it, or to protect the app's users from harm.
How your data is protected
- Data is encrypted when it travels between the app and the server, and encrypted where it's stored.
- Database rules stop any account from reading another account's private data.
- The app never stores a password. You sign in with Apple or Google.
- The accounts I use to run the app are protected with two-step sign-in.
No system is perfectly secure. If a breach ever affects your information, I'll let you know promptly and as the law requires.
How long it's kept
Your data is kept for as long as you have an account. When you delete your account:
- Your account details, journal, ratings, notes and photos are deleted right away.
- Puzzles you added stay listed so others can still find them, and the private link to your account is removed.
- Your anonymous ratings no longer count toward averages.
- Copies in backups are deleted within 7 days.
- Reports you made may be kept without your name while needed to keep the app safe.
Server logs are kept by Supabase for 7 days, then deleted.
Your choices
- See or change your data: edit or remove anything in your journal, your name in Settings → Account, and your photo on your Profile.
- Export your data: Settings → Your data → Export my data gives you CSV files of your journal.
- Delete your account: Settings → Account → Sign-in → Delete account. This also disconnects Sign in with Apple or Google.
- Camera and photos: change access anytime in your iPhone's Settings.
Your privacy rights
Wherever you live, you can ask me to:
- See the information I hold about you, or get a copy of it. Settings → Your data → Export my data covers most of it.
- Correct anything that's wrong. Most things you can edit yourself in the app.
- Delete your account and data, from Settings or by emailing me.
- Withdraw consent for anything optional, such as camera or photo access.
To make a request, email piecematesapp@gmail.com. I'll respond within 30 days.
If you're in the EU or UK, I use your information to provide the app you signed up for, and to keep it safe and free of abuse. You can also complain to your local data protection authority.
Children
Piecemates isn't intended for children under 13, and I don't knowingly collect personal information from them. If I learn that a child under 13 has created an account, I'll delete it and its information. If you believe a child under 13 has given me information, email piecematesapp@gmail.com.
Changes to this policy
I review this policy at least once a year and whenever the app's data practices change. When it changes, I'll update the effective date at the top. For bigger changes, such as when groups are added, I'll also let you know in the app before they take effect.
